Bold First Step

With NFC tap technology gaining momentum, we decided to experiment. Our first idea? A 3D-printed key fob with an embedded NFC chip. It was futuristic, sleek, and innovative—or so we thought. At the National Restaurant Association Conference in Chicago, we unveiled it with high hopes. But there was a problem: it only worked about 60% of the time. Between device compatibility issues, software quirks, and user confusion, it was clear we had built something novel but not dependable.

The Breakthrough

Back at the drawing board, we asked ourselves: What do people already know how to use? The answer came from an unlikely source—COVID-19. The pandemic had normalized QR codes, making them second nature for scanning menus, tickets, and forms. Why not leverage that familiarity?

As Apple-certified developers, we pivoted. We combined the power of QR codes with digital wallet technology and paired it with a professionally designed OneLink Page. Unlike other solutions focused solely on how to deliver the link (think NFC cards), we shifted our focus to where the link takes you.
